Don Vicente Gullas and Lady Josefina R. Gullas established the
University of the Visayas in 1919 as the Visayan Institute. GCM
is a component of the university’s educational system. Its
physical facilities were destroyed by the Second World War, and
it reopened in 1946 in Argao, Cebu before moving back to its
original and current location in Colon Street, Cebu City. It
became the first university in Cebu when it received university
status in 1948. It has produced distinguished alumni in
government service, public administration, and the professions
of law, engineering and architecture, pharmacy, medicine,
nursing, accountancy, business, liberal arts, education,
criminology maritime and nautical, computer studies, and sports
and the arts since its initial enrollment of 37 students in
1919.
GCM is committed to the education of men and women, the
provision of medical and public health services for the greater
glory of God, the eternal well-being of the people of the
Philippines, and the temporal glorification of Central Visayas,
particularly the province and cities of Cebu, in fulfillment of
its purposes, teaching, research, and community service.
